Serj Tankian : album solista

System of a Down has no patience for groupthink. It manufactures dissent through hard rock that’s hard to pigeonhole — part thrash-metal, part Middle Eastern and sometimes just plain weird.

The unorthodox band is releasing two albums in six months, pretty much a no-no in the corporate music business. But that’s just what System of a Down does.

“Mezmerize” was released in May, and “Hypnotize” is set to reach record stores Nov. 22. System of a Down’s parent record company, Sony Music, wasn’t too jazzed with the idea.

“Anything that doesn’t fit into a cookie cutter is a tough sell for the record company,” says System of a Down singer Serj Tankian, calling from his cell phone before a show in Detroit. “But ultimately it worked".

But “Mezmerize” and “Hypnotize” could actually be thought of as a single song cycle. Both albums were recorded and mastered as o­ne overall project. And the vibe is intense, to the point of sounding near hysterical.

Maybe it was all too much for o­ne dose. But “Mezmerize” debuted o­n top of the album charts, selling more than 450,000 copies its first week. There’s no reason to think “Hypnotize” won’t come close to that.

“It is o­ne big double album, except we released it separately,” Tankian says. “We felt that based o­n the tape of music that we had, being somewhat progressive, as well as people’s short attention spans (and the fact that we like long records), we were basically faced with a double record. But we decided to release it in a way that it wouldn’t overwhelm things. And people could live with the first half before they get the second.”

System of a Down was a slightly different beast when hammering out “Hypnotize” and “Mezmerize.” Guitarist Daron Malakian, who usually writes the bulk of the band’s music, is singing and writing more lyrics now. That’s no problem for Tankian, System of a Down’s usual mouthpiece.

“I’ve never liked the corporate structure, let alone like it in a band,” Tankian says. “I don’t like titles and positions and stuff like that. We’re artists. We all write music and we all do what we do. There shouldn’t be that type of separation. No flowcharts involved — nor pie charts.”

“Whatever the song requires, that’s what we should do,” he adds. “If it requires a tuba, we’ll add a tuba. If it requires strings, we’ll put in strings. If it requires Daron’s voice and his kind of vibe, then that’s what we’ll put in.”

Tankian has other muses outside System of a Down. His activist side is expressed through Axis of Justice. It’s a nonprofit group, co-founded with Audioslave’s Tom Morello, that has organized food drives for the homeless and takes o­n various political causes. Tankian’s own Serjical Strike Records is set to release a record by Bucket-head, the guitar god who wears a KFC bucket as headgear. Tankian also plans a solo record after “Hypnotize” is released.

“System has been the inspiration in terms of how I got into music,” he says. “It’s been my mainstay for the last 10 years, it’s been my day job per se and it’s been the launch to an amazing opening of opportunities for all of us within the band. But it’s also o­ne thing and o­ne animal.”

And System of a Down is a beast that’s never satisfied.

“As diverse as our music is, it’s not as diverse as I’d like it to be. I think we can go a lot further. But that’s good. That means we’re really ambitious. We’re always trying to outdo ourselves.”

“I think Daron and I pull in opposite directions,” he says. “And that creates this kind of tension that when it’s released o­n stage ... it’s amazing. It’s powerful.”

spero solo che resti comunque concentrato sui system, se no c'è il rischi che daron faccia tutto lui..

Ragazzi questo è un problema serio...senza offesa per Daron non si può stare!!!
Però sono curiosa...un album solista di Serj...!

Che già il fatto che si rifiuti di cantare in una canzone del suo gruppo perchè non ne condivide il contenuto è abbastanza grave... Con tutti i side-projects che i soad hanno un album solista di Serj non mi stupisce, ma la dispersione di energie aumenta.

Per lanciare una bomba (provocazione volontaria, non significa che io lo pensi davvero, FUFFA NON RIDERE, ti ho visto!!!!): magari cerca fuori quel qualcosa che non trova più nei soad.

I system sono uno di quei gruppi, secondo me, che funziona perfettamente solo se gli elementi restano quelli che sono. Voglio dire, il lavoro di Daron è buono, ma quello di Serj è ottimo!! Spero anch'io che resti concentrato sui system, perchè senza sarebbe tutto diverso..anche se l'idea di un suo album solista non nacondo che mi attiri...

Ma che faccia quello che si sente di fare............E cmq secondo me Daron ci dà dentro alla stragrandissima..........

l'idea del solista d serj m piace in quanto sarà qualcosa che ci aiuterà ad aspettare un sesto cd dei soad :D

Per il solista di Serj...WOW...non vedo l'ora mi piace molto l'idea..kissè ke cosa ne verrà fuori...spero pero come hanno già detto ke non metta da parte il gruppo(anke se non credo!)

Quando ho letto il titolo del thread:

mi è venuto un mezzo infarto.

Penso subito al peggio e per un attimo ho immaginato che i Soad si fossero sciolti e che ognuno di loro avesse intrapreso una carriera solista...

Forse sono ancora shockata da quando i Take That smisero di cantare insieme. Avevo solo 9 anni, è stato uno shock tremendo! :

E invece c'è bisogno di una petizione, perchè ho letto su altri forum di gente entusiasta del fatto che Daron fosse più presente, scrivevano roba tipo "Daron Rulez"

A me piace Mezmerize, anche per la doppia voce, ma voglio un ritorno di Serj alla scrittura dei testi e deve cantare più lui che Daron...

E infatti in mezmerize l'unica canzone scritta interamente da Serj, Question!, si sente e come!
Daron è un grande ma deve attenersi ai ruoli e rispettare i suoi limiti: chitarra e controcanto....
Serj è l'anima di questo gruppo: cantante, poeta, musicista! Una voce così potente ed espressiva è imprescidibile.
Spero davvero che non trascuri i SOAD ma sono altrettanto curioso del suo album da solista.
Non toccate SERJ TANKIAN!!!

... daron da solo renderebbe le canzoni dei soad noiosissime, è solo una seconda voce, senza serj non c'è storia. Album solista, vi alletta? Equivale a dire un album dei soad -3 persone, un album di pessima qualità

Daron è un grande ma deve attenersi ai ruoli e rispettare i suoi limiti: chitarra e controcanto....
Serj è l'anima di questo gruppo: cantante, poeta, musicista! Una voce così potente ed espressiva è imprescidibile.
Spero davvero che non trascuri i SOAD ma sono altrettanto curioso del suo album da solista.

E' come dire che Serj esiste solo ed esclusivamente in funzione dei soad? Serj è e rimane un ottimo componitore, e se album solista equivale a dire collaborazioni con artisti di ottimo calibro come quelli con cui ha collaborato finora, direi "ma quando esce?".

Se poi il pezzo che ha fatto con Tony Iommi, l'altro con Buckethead, l'arrangiamento di "Bird of paradise" di Charlie Parker, o l'album Serart ti fanno schifo o perlomeno non ti piacciono è un altro discorso, ma non sarei così disfattista. Una personalità ben definita l'hanno tutti e 4, perchè non sfruttarla se ne hanno voglia?

mm io sostanzialemnte sono d'accordo con caos, perchè credo che serj e daron, siano 2 tipi di persone molto diverse con quindi idee altrettanto differenti.Penso ceh serj voglia fare un lavoro in cui sia completamento libero di esprimersi senza dover mediare le sue posizioni con quelle di daron(cosa che ha dovuto fare cantando, anche se per poco , in lost in hollywood)che è una cosa che bisogna fare per forza quando si è in un gruppo costituito da piu' persone.

serj non ha cantato lost in hollywood solo perchè parlava di un'esperienza di daron, è chiaro che non ne condividesse il sinificato, inoltre dopotutto la canzone si può definire "di daron", quindi è giusto che sia lui a cantarla...

Maaaaaaaaaaaa quanto ci ripetiamo,stessi discorsi a rotazione..[sulla base di du hast dei rammstein ci sta' benissimo]
Comunque scusate se faccio il bastian contrario..Ma mi dispiacerebbe solo "perdere"i testi di tankian...Se cantano tutte le canzoni insieme come bambini dello zUcchino d'oro x me va' benissimo...Anzi
